The game

Quests and dungeons

Somebody in town wants something doing, and there is a door in the ground that leads somewhere worse.

Somebody in town needs a hand

Walk up to them and ask. That is the whole of it.

Rennick the woodcutter, out past Aeven's west gate, has crows in his stack again. Ask one of the guards on the main street what they are about, go and thin the roost out, then walk back and tell him it is done. He pays in experience and in coin.

What you are meant to be doing sits quietly in the corner of the screen, one step at a time, and a line of markers points across the ground toward whatever the step wants. If you would rather find it yourself, turn the trail off.

Everything you have taken on, everything you have finished and everything you walked away from is in the journal.

A quest called Crows on the Roost tracked in the corner of the screen, with the town behind it

Step by step: Your first quest .

A floor of your own

Speak to the warden, take a party in, and what is behind the door is yours alone.

A dungeon is not a room everybody shares. When your party walks in you get your own copy of it, so nothing has been cleared out from under you and nobody is standing on the stairs. Clear what is down there and the way on opens.

Get knocked out or lose your nerve and you can walk back out the way you came. Come back and finish it another day.

Inside the Flooded Cellar: a stone room with rats in it and two party members listed in the corner
  • The Flooded Cellar

One room, ankle deep, and more rats in it than anybody wants. A short trip, and the one to cut your teeth on.

On your own or with a couple of friends

  • The Ancient Crypt

Three floors under the old chapel, graves and bats on the way down, and something at the bottom the diggers stopped short of.

Bring a party, and bring some levels

What to expect the first time: Your first dungeon .

What you come back with

Off the floor, into the bag, and out of the bag when it will not shut.

Things that die leave something on the ground. Walk over it and pick it up and it flies to your hand. If you would rather not carry it, put it back down: the floor is a real place and what you drop there stays there for a while.

Coin is coin. It sits in the footer of your bag beside the weight you are carrying, and it is what pays for a guild of your own and for more room at the bank.

The banker in Aeven will keep whatever will not fit. Your first drawer costs nothing. When that fills up there are more to buy, and what is in them is safe even when your bag is not.

The bank window: numbered storage tabs on the left, the player bag full of items on the right

How the drawers work: Gold and the bank .
